Wine Tasting Championships
Albion’s Bowery and Hassel Bring Home Awards
25th Annual California Wine Tasting Championships
Greenwood Ridge Vineyards
Since he began competing in 1995, Mark Bowery - the creator of Albion River Inn’s award winning wine & spirits list – has consistently swirled, sniffed and tasted his way to the top at the California Wine Tasting Championships at Greenwood Ridge Vineyards in Philo. This July, Allan Green, winemaker, vineyard owner, and founder of the two-day tournament, celebrated the competition’s 25th anniversary as Mark claimed the title of Individual Grand Champion, finished second in the Professional Singles division, and with tasting partner Sarah Hassel of Albion River Inn and Henry Wine Group, successfully defended their Professional Doubles title.
“The sport of blind tasting is kind of like golf, there are all sorts of tools and tactics, and a little skill helps, but ultimately, you just tee it up, mutter prayers under your breath and hope for the best”
says Bowery.
Competition in the three categories of novice, amateur, and wine-industry professional is fierce, but to encourage neophytes Green created a “tasting training camp” for 2008, and also added a new category of Professional/Amateur Doubles just to spice things up a bit.
For the contest, wines are decanted, poured from numbered carafes and tasted blind. Contestants have four minutes to identify the varietal, the viticultural region, producer, and the vintage. To get any points you must first identify the varietal, and as Bowery quips, “No varietal, no points.” Those with the highest point totals proceed to division finals, then the top-scoring professionals and amateurs vie for the coveted Grand Championship and Masters titles. In the event of a tie, a sudden death taste-off settles the match. Bowery, Hassel and scores of their wine-savoring comrades will flock to Greenwood Ridge next July to tee up again, but the rest of us can attend just for the fun of good food, wine and music, and watch the others stick out their necks.
